\u2014The campaign manager for James Ellers, candidate for VT Governor in the Democrat
\nPrimary, has contacted Liberty Union to request Liberty Union\u2019s endorsement. Ellers\u2019
\ncampaign has also contacted the Progressive Party with the same request and floated
\nthe proposal that Ellers could be a candidate with the Progressive Party in the General
\nElection if he fails to secure the Democrat\u2019s nomination.
\nFollowing discussion on the question of endorsing candidates from other parties or
\nallowing a person who is not committed to the principles to which Liberty Union adheres
\nto be a candidate with Liberty Union, consensus of those present at the meeting is that:
\nThe Liberty Union Party, a non-violent, revolutionary socialist party, does not
\nendorse candidates in any capitalist party.
\nAll candidates with the Liberty Union Party should be committed members of
\nLiberty Union, committed to the Liberty Union Platform and the principles that are
\nits foundation.
\n2. Reid Kane Kotlas, attending a Liberty Union Party meeting for the first time,
\nintroduced himself. He is a member of Socialist Party U.S.A.. lives in White River
\nJunction and has been organizing in Vermont and New Hampshire. He has established
\na Chapter of Socialist Party U.S.A. in New Hampshire and has initiated an on-line
\nSocialist Reading and Discussion Group. He is an informed socialist whose activism
\narises from concern about the rise of Authoritarianism and Fascism.
\nStatements and quotes from the ensuing discussion:
\n\u2014Capitalism is the enemy of democracy.
\n\u2014Definitions of \u201cLeft\u201d and \u201cRight\u201d: Right=property and privilege for a few.Left=egalitarian society.
\n\u2014Public schools should be sites for democratic practice. Small classes in small
\nschools, allow students at the elementary level to attend schools in their own
\ncommunity, thus building community.
\n\u2014The choice facing the Teachers\u2019 Union: Allow and promote militant caucuses within
\nthe union or be absorbed into the Democrat Party. (Democracy in public schools
\nincludes higher wages for teachers.)
\n\u2014Addiction is a symptom of a degenerating society.
\n\u2014Addiction is not a crime. Cops should not be allowed to \u201cpolice addiction.\u201d
\n\u2014Decriminalize Poverty
\n\u2014The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement works to end international
\nsupport for Israel’s oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with
\ninternational law. Liberty Union supports BDS in principle and plans to find actual ways
\nto do this at future meetings.
\n\u2014Immigration of people across the southern border of the United States is a
\nconsequence of U.S. policy in Central and South America since the inception of these
\nnation states.
\n\u2014Montreal Antifascistes documented the May 19 action at Roxham Road, as well as
\nother ongoing anti-fascist work. (Update: Montreal Antifascists participated in the June
\n15 \u201cSolidarity Across Borders\u201d action, also documented on their website.)
\n4. Upcoming events:
\nSeptember 9: Liberty Union Party has reserved (to be confirmed) the Dummerston
\nGrange for a first annual commemoration of the life and work of Liberty Union founder,
\nPeter Diamondstone.
\nNovember 11: Liberty Union will determine how best to oppose the colossal show of
\nmilitary might being prepared by the current U.S. administration.
